Lemma. Evaluation away from the nodes and at all nodes [cn-0020]

Status:

Statement. For the constrained polynomial spaces [cn-0019], evaluation at a non-node \(t\) has kernel \((\xi -t)\mathcal P_{h-1}(Z)\), and hence

\[\dim E_h(Z;t)=k_h(Z).\]

Evaluation at the \(m\) constraint nodes identifies \(\mathcal P_{m-1}(Z)\) with \(\bigoplus _i(U_i\cap Z)\). Consequently

\[\sum _{h=0}^{m-1}k_h(Z)=\sum _{i=1}^m\dim (U_i\cap Z).\]

Proof. A polynomial map vanishing at \(t\) is divisible by \(\xi -t\), coordinate by coordinate in \(Z\). At each constraint node, division rescales its value by the nonzero scalar \((t_i-t)^{-1}\), so membership in \(U_i\) is preserved. Multiplication proves the reverse inclusion. Rank-nullity yields the first identity.

For values \(z_i\in U_i\cap Z\), the Lagrange interpolant

\[P(\xi )=\sum _i\left (\prod _{j\ne i}\frac {\xi -t_j}{t_i-t_j}\right )z_i\]

belongs to \(\mathcal P_{m-1}(Z)\) and has those values. Uniqueness follows because a scalar polynomial of degree at most \(m-1\) with \(m\) distinct roots is zero, applied to each coordinate. Taking dimensions and telescoping the increments proves the second identity.
