Definition. Graphs of linear maps [cn-0026]

For a linear map \(X:\mathbb R^d\to \mathbb R^d\), its graph subspace is

\[\Gamma _X=\{(v,Xv):v\in \mathbb R^d\}\subseteq \mathbb R^d\oplus \mathbb R^d.\]

The map \(v\mapsto (v,Xv)\) identifies \(\ker (X-Y)\) with \(\Gamma _X\cap \Gamma _Y\). Therefore \(\dim (\Gamma _X\cap \Gamma _Y)=d-\operatorname {rank}(X-Y)\). In particular, these two graph subspaces are disjoint exactly when \(X-Y\) is invertible. This is the conversion used by the rank-sum corollary [cn-0027].
