Definition. Balanced pair counts and the Zarankiewicz number [cn-0006]

For an integer \(r\geq 1\), the balanced pair count is

\[d_r=\left \lfloor \frac r2\right \rfloor \left \lfloor \frac {r-1}{2}\right \rfloor =\binom {\lfloor r/2\rfloor }{2}+\binom {\lceil r/2\rceil }{2}.\]

The Zarankiewicz number is \(Z(m,n)=d_m d_n\). In particular \(d_{2s}=s(s-1)\), \(d_{2s+1}=s^2\), and \(d_1=d_2=0\). The binomial formula counts pairs lying on the same ray when \(r\) vertices are split as evenly as possible between two opposite rays. This is the count used by the upper-bound construction [cn-0036].
