Definition. Complete bipartite graphs and stars [cn-0002]

For positive integers \(m,n\), the complete bipartite graph \(K_{m,n}\) has vertex classes \(A=\{a_1,\ldots ,a_m\}\) and \(B=\{b_1,\ldots ,b_n\}\), and one edge \(a_i b_p\) for each pair \((i,p)\). There are no edges within either class. We abbreviate the edge \(a_i b_p\) to \(ip\).

The star at a vertex consists of all edges incident with it. Two edges are adjacent if they share an endpoint, and independent otherwise. We orient every edge \(ip\) from \(a_i\) to \(b_p\); this orientation records signs and imposes no restriction on a drawing.
