Definition. Signed interior intersections [cn-0010]

For oriented edges \(e,f\) in a normalized drawing [cn-0008], give a crossing sign \(+1\) when their ordered tangent directions have positive determinant in the oriented plane and \(-1\) otherwise. Their signed intersection number \(I(e,f)\) is the sum of these signs over all their interior crossings; set \(I(e,e)=0\).

Thus \(I(f,e)=-I(e,f)\), and \(|I(e,f)|\) is at most the number of crossing points of that pair. A zero signed count need not mean that the edges are disjoint. This distinction is used explicitly in the rank bound [cn-0035].
