Definition. Row-plus-column matrices [cn-0017]

An \(n\times n\) real matrix is row-plus-column, or additive, if its entries have the form \(H(p,q)=r_p+c_q\) for some vectors \(r,c\in \mathbb R^n\). Write \(\mathcal L\) for this linear subspace. It is the ambiguity removed by the detector.

Equivalently, every rectangular difference vanishes:

\[H(p,q)-H(p,q')-H(p',q)+H(p',q')=0.\]

Indeed the additive form gives cancellation. Conversely, fix \(p_0,q_0\); the vanishing identity gives \(H(p,q)=H(p,q_0)+H(p_0,q)-H(p_0,q_0)\), which has the required form.
