Definition. Spoke orders and half-order matrices [cn-0011]

At a vertex of a normalized drawing [cn-0008], choose a gap between outward spokes. Reading counterclockwise from that gap gives a linear spoke order. For incident edges \(e,f\), let \(T_v(e,f)=1\) if \(e\) precedes \(f\), \(-1\) if \(f\) precedes \(e\), and \(0\) if \(e=f\). Let \(\sigma _{ve}=1\) for an edge oriented out of \(v\) and \(-1\) for an edge oriented into \(v\).

For any strict linear order \(\prec \) on \(\{1,\ldots ,n\}\), its half-order matrix is

\[S_\prec (p,q)=\begin {cases}\tfrac 12&p\prec q,\\-\tfrac 12&q\prec p,\\0&p=q.\end {cases}\]

The cut is auxiliary. The local chord identity [cn-0014] explains why cycle pairings are unaffected by it, and the detector theorem [cn-0034] applies simultaneously to every possible linear order.
